Mind The Acoustic Pieces

New week and back to the A-Z format. Kicking it back into form with M's. This run should last a few weeks and there's lots of diversity thrown in. Starting things off is Maiden United. A side project from Rudd Jolie, who plays guitar for symphonic power metal giants Within Temptation. 'Mind The Acoustic Pieces' is an all acoustic reinterpretation of the classic Iron Maiden album 'Piece Of Mind'. While it doesn't exactly stick to the same tracklisting as the original, all the songs are here. This is definitely a different take on Maiden. Musically it's stripped down and rearranged in a haunting way. Vocals are handles by Damian Wilson of Threshold, with the exception of 'To Tame A Land', which features Anneke Van Giersbergen on vocals. Overall this is worth checking out if you're a Maiden or a Within Temptation fan.

I stumbled upon this album recently by accident. I've seen it being talked about in the metal community. I'm glad I did too, this is really just a relaxed version of a classic Maiden record. The thing with bands covering songs is you never quite know what it's going to be like. Sure there's a handful of covers that are better than the originals. And there are some that are just really terrible. This falls into the really good category. It's different from what one might expect from a side project. And I think that gives it it's charm. The band has become a bit more than a side project now with a second album being released soon. Really hoping the second record is just as good.
